Golden Temple in Amritsar

Amritsar, the most sacred city for the Sikhs, is home to the Golden Temple, also known as Hari Mandir or Darbar Sahib. The temple is surrounded by a large Sarovar (manmade lake), known as the AmritSar (Lake of Holy Water or Immortal Nectar).  The two storeyed marble temple is reached by a causeway known as the Guru’s Bridge. The golden dome is believed to represent an inverted lotus.

Priests in the temple keep up a continuous reading from the Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book. Around the temple are several other historical buildings. The Golden Temple has overtaken the Taj Mahal to become India’s most-visited monument.
