Lakshmi Narayan Temple in Chamba

The Lakshmi Narayan Temple located at Chamba 56km from Dalhousie in the state of Himachal Pradesh is regarded as the oldest and the largest one, a picturesque village with narrow streets and ancient temples. There are six temples in the Lakshmi Narayan Temple complex known as the six shikara-style temples feature exquisite sculptures and date from the 10th century all the way up to the 19th century.

The largest and oldest temple in this group is that of Lakshmi Narayan (Vishnu). They are arranged from North to South and are dedicated to either Shiva or Vishnu. The legend of the temple states that Raja Sahil Verma, who constructed this temple, sent nine of his sons to the Vindhyas mountains to get marble which was suitable for the construction of the Vishnu idol.

The Gauri Shankar Temple here is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has fine stone carvings of the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers personified as goddesses on either side of the door frame. Also in Chamba are several other temples Chamundi Devi Temple, Bajreshwari Devi Temple, Hariral Temple, Radha Krishna Temple and the Sitaram Temple, dedicated to Lord Rama.
