Mahalakshmi temple in Kolhapur is one of the exquisite examples of architectural aesthetic and serene spirituality. A holy place from ancient times and called the ‘Dakshin Kashi’, Kolhapur witnesses a large number of pilgrims from nook and corner of the country every year.

According to an interesting legend from the mythology, once Lord Shiva and goddess Mahalakshmi had a dispute over the importance of their sacred habitats on earth, Kashi the abode of Shiva and Karvir (Kolhapur) that of Mahalakshmi. They asked Lord Vishnu to choose the better one, then Lord Vishnu placed Kashi in one pan and Karvir in the other, interestingly Karvir was found heavier of the two.
